The rank size rule in not valid in the case of China because the estimated population of the second largest city is closest to the population of Shenzhen which is actually the fourth largest city in China. On the rank size rule estimates the third, fourth and fifth largest cities are each about one million people in difference and the actual third, fourth and fifth most populated cities are a couple 100,000 people different and far above the estimates.
