"Portuguese culture feels the pinch as arts budget slashed"
Author:Emma Jane Kirby Date Published:7/23/13
Summary: In Portugal, the government has cut its arts funding to 0.37% in an attempt to meet the country's international bailout demands. The government views arts funding as more of an expense that they can do with out than an investment. The budget cuts have brought anger and unemployment to those pursuing an art career. This includes authors to musicians.
Opinionated: The budget cuts to the arts funding was a bad judgement call by the Portuguese government. There were already few citizens that appreciated and attempted to preserve their culture. Now there are even fewer that can survive off of a career in the arts. The government is making a huge mistake by not realizing what they are losing and the impact it will have in the future.
Cultural Ties: This article ties into Portugal's culture because the government is imposing a great threat on preserving its culture. The culture was dependent on the few amount of people that that were practicing it on a regular basis. The budget cuts have forced those people to either give up their career choice or move to another country. This will cause Portugal to lose most of its cultural ties and over time will not have a culture. More and more of the mass population will view culture as obsolete. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-23248062
